About this calculator

This calculator shows the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your traditional IRA or 401(k) for the year. Under SECURE 2.0, RMDs generally start at age 73. The IRS requires you to withdraw a minimum based on your prior year-end balance and your age. This tool uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table so you can plan your withdrawals and avoid penalties.

How it works

The minimum withdrawal is your account balance at the end of the prior year divided by the IRS distribution period for your age (from the Uniform Lifetime Table). We express this as a percentage of your balance for convenience. The percentage increases as you get older.

You may withdraw more than the RMD in any year. Amounts withdrawn are generally taxable as ordinary income. Roth IRAs do not require RMDs during the owner's lifetime. Special rules apply to inherited IRAs. Verify with the IRS and your financial institution.
